The Task Teams of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) focus on major systemic higher education policy issues on which the South African Minister of Education has requested the CHE's advice or on which the CHE wishes to provide advice proactively. Task teams are established according to need.
Members of Task Teams, including the Chairperson, are appointed by the CHE, and non-CHE members may participate with the approval of the Council. The CHE Secretariat is responsible for the management and administration of Task Team work.
The CHE currently has one Task Team, on South African Government Involvement in and Regulation of Higher Education, Institutional Autonomy and Academic Freedom. The work of the Task Team will shortly be concluded.
Task Team on South African Government Involvement in and Regulation of Higher Education, Institutional Autonomy and Academic Freedom
Established in March 2005, the Task Team has investigated the past decade of regulation of South African higher education by government and other agencies, and promoted debate on conceptions of institutional autonomy, academic freedom and public accountability in general, and in the specific context of higher education transformation.
