The Improving Teaching & Learning Project, established in the HEQC's Directorate of Quality Promotion and Capacity Development in 2002, had two main goals:
-
To develop criteria, minimum quality thresholds and guides to good practice on teaching and learning to inform the HEQC institutional audit and programme accreditation procedures, and thus to ensure that these contribute to the enhancement and valid evaluation of teaching and learning.
-
To engage the academic community in discussion on the suitability of the proposed criteria and minimum quality thresholds.
A Working Group was established, and their initial work identified seven focus areas:
-
Programme Planning, Design and Management
-
Programme & Course Review
-
Access & Admissions
-
Student Development & Support
-
The Assessment of Students
-
Staff Development
-
Postgraduate Research Programmes
These were developed to become the HEQC's seven
Improving Teaching & Learning (ITL) Resources.
Each of these can be read and used individually, with cross-references showing how they relate to each other. The Introduction, which explains the purpose of the Resources and how they relate to the HEQC's quality assurance mandate and its quality promotion and capacity development activities, is relevant to all of the Resources.
