Introduction
The year 2005 presents a number of quality related challenges for the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and for higher education institutions in the country. In the public higher education sector, merged institutions, comprehensives and universities of technology are in the process of developing new academic identities.
Private higher education is also engaged in a range of consolidation and refocusing initiatives. All higher education institutions are faced with the challenge of developing new programme and research profiles that are as academically rigorous as they are socially and economically responsive. The HEQC is in the process of implementing new audit and accreditation systems as well as supporting capacity development in a number of areas, in accordance with its statutory responsibilities.
